Four Ways to Sell in North Dakota

North Dakota exempts legal tender coins and 99.9% pure bullion from sales tax and has no statewide license, holding period or police reporting rule for gold buyers; cities and counties license pawnbrokers and secondhand stores. Its scrap metal law has registered scrap dealers copy your photo ID and pay by check or electronic transfer above one thousand dollars, so here are the four ways North Dakotans sell and what each one involves.

Highest offer

Mail It to a National Buyer (Us)

Priced against the national market: we compete with every buyer in the country for your metal, not just the shops in your area.

Best for: Anyone who wants the strongest offer without driving, especially outside the big metros.

  • A padded kit mailed by USPS, or a FedEx 2Day label you can download right away
  • Priced off the live spot market, not a walk-in rate
  • Same-day payment** once you accept; free return postage if you decline
  • GIA-trained appraisers see every stone and hallmark
  • Two to four days for the kit to arrive and the box to come back
  • You need a printer or a phone to show the QR label at the counter

Local Coin Shop in North Dakota

Priced against local competition and the shop's own inventory needs that week; strongest on the bullion they turn over fastest.

Jeweler or "We Buy Gold" Storefront

Many retail jewelers do not buy jewelry back, even pieces they sold you. The ones that do usually pass scrap on to a refiner and price in their own margin and a showroom's overhead.

Pawn Shop

Pawn shops do buy gold, silver and coins outright, but the offer is built around quick resale and loan economics, so it is generally the lowest offer of any channel.

How the Free Mail-In Works

We are Accurate Precious Metals, a family-owned refiner. We have bought and sold over $300 million since 2012, and we hold an A+ rating with the BBB.

We buy for our own refinery, so your offer follows the live market.

We open every package on camera. We test the metal, and GIA-trained gemologists grade the stones. You get a list that shows the weight, the purity, and the spot price.

Say yes and we can pay you the same day.** Say no and you can have it back. You pay no postage.* Full mail-in details.

We are a refiner: we melt what we buy, so a North Dakota seller gets a refiner's price, not a reseller's.
  1. Request Your Free Kit

Fill in the short form on this page. We mail a padded kit by USPS to any North Dakota address, usually within one business day. You can also download a FedEx 2Day label right away from the email we send, or from the thank-you page, and ship before the kit arrives.

  2. Pack and Drop Off

Pack your gold, silver, platinum, diamonds, coins or jewelry in the kit we mail, or in your own box. Attach the FedEx 2Day label and drop it at any FedEx location. FedEx insurance* and tracking start when it is scanned.

  3. Get an Itemized Offer

Our appraisers weigh, XRF-test and grade every piece and send you a line-by-line offer by phone or email, usually the day the package arrives.

  4. Accept and Get Paid

Accept, complete a simple online verification, and we pay the same day** by check or wire; faster options carry a fee listed in our Mail-in Policy. Decline and you can have your items back with no postage cost.*

* Shipping insurance and return shipping are provided as described in our Mail-in Policy; please read it before you ship.
** Same-day payment is available on most offers accepted during business hours; timing depends on when you accept and the payment method you choose, and is not guaranteed.

What We Buy: Any Karat, Any Condition

We do not buy gold-plated, gold-filled or silver-plated items. Not sure what you have? Send it in and we will test it. If we cannot buy it, we mail it back and you pay no postage.* Full list.

North Dakota selling rules & taxes

Selling Gold in North Dakota: What the Law Requires

The rules for selling come first: what applies when you mail your items to us, and what a shop inside North Dakota must do when you sell in person. The tax picture follows. Each card cites the statute or agency it comes from; open a card for the detail. Last verified October 5, 2026. This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

Selling by mail · out of state

We buy by mail

What applies when I sell by mail from North Dakota?

As of October 5, 2026, North Dakota has no state law setting requirements for selling by mail to a buyer outside the state.

Selling in North Dakota · in-state shops

What do North Dakota shops require when I sell in person?

North Dakota sets no statewide hold, license or police report for gold buyers; cities and counties license pawnbrokers and secondhand stores, and the state scrap metal law covers registered scrap dealers.

Sales tax

Partly exempt

Is there sales tax on gold, silver and platinum in North Dakota?

North Dakota exempts legal tender coins and 99.9% pure bullion from sales tax; jewelry and lower-purity metal are taxed.

Capital gains

40% long-term exclusion

Does North Dakota tax the profit when I sell precious metals?

North Dakota taxes precious-metals gains as income but lets you exclude 40% of a net long-term capital gain; a 2025 bill to exempt gold and silver gains failed.

Buying Bullion in North Dakota Instead?

Looking to buy rather than sell? Many coin shops sell bullion over the counter, and we stock gold, silver and platinum coins and bars at live-priced premiums with insured delivery to North Dakota addresses. North Dakota exempts some bullion purchases from sales tax but not others (see the tax rules above), so check whether your specific order qualifies before choosing a local shop over an online dealer. Prices lock at checkout.

Good to know

Questions from North Dakota Sellers

Straight answers on price, payment and safety for North Dakota sellers.

For jewelry, dental gold, sterling and mixed lots, we usually make the strongest offer: we are a refiner, we price off live spot, and we compete with every buyer in the country, not just the shops near you. For a handful of bullion coins you want to turn into cash today, a reputable coin shop in Fargo or Bismarck is a good option; we list 5 above. Many jewelers do not buy jewelry back, and the ones that do usually sell it on to a refiner, so you are a step further from the refiner's price. Avoid pawn shops for outright sales unless speed matters more than price.

We do: crowns, bridges and inlays, with or without the tooth. Some coin shops and jewelers do not buy dental work, and some price it as 10k. Dental alloys often contain platinum and palladium, so a full assay can pay more. Drop it in the same mail-in kit as your other items.

Yes. Look for PT950, PT900, PLAT or 950 stamps. Some shops cannot test for platinum and quote it as white gold, which undervalues it. Our XRF assay identifies platinum and palladium and pays on the platinum spot price, which is also what we buy platinum bars and coins on.

If a coin might be a key date or high grade (pre-1933 gold, early Morgans, anything already slabbed), get a numismatist's opinion; a good local coin shop or our own numismatic desk. Common-date bullion and 90% silver trade on metal value, and there the itemized mail-in offer is usually the higher number because we buy nationally rather than against one shop's inventory.

Yes. Broken chains, single earrings, bent rings, class rings and mixed 10k, 14k and 18k all go in the same kit, along with sterling flatware and holloware. We sort and assay each piece, so a mixed bag is priced item by item instead of at the lowest karat in the pile.

You get an itemized offer first, listing each piece with its weight and purity, so you can compare it with any local quote. Turn it down and you can have your items back; you pay no return postage.* Accept, complete a simple online verification, and payment goes out the same day,** by check or wire. Most offers stay open 14 days, and bullion, coin and larger offers can expire sooner. An offer you do not answer in time lapses. The details are in our Mail-in Policy.

Yes. We mail a padded kit by USPS. You can also download a FedEx 2Day label right away from your email or the thank-you page. FedEx tracks the package on the way to us, and it is insured up to $1,000 per order unless you ask us for more coverage before you ship.* We photograph and log every item when it arrives. If you say no, you can have your items back and you pay no postage.* The details are in our Mail-in Policy. Since 2012 we have bought and sold over $300 million, and we hold an A+ rating with the BBB.
