Minnesota licenses walk-in jewelry buyers by county, requires them to pay by check or a similar draft rather than cash, and has them hold jewelry and other gold, silver or platinum items 14 days before reselling, while coins and bullion fall outside that law. Bars and rounds are free of sales tax when you buy, but coins and jewelry are taxed, so here are the three ways Minnesotans sell and what each one involves.
Priced against local competition and the shop's own inventory needs that week; strongest on the bullion they turn over fastest.
Many retail jewelers do not buy jewelry back, even pieces they sold you. The ones that do usually pass scrap on to a refiner and price in their own margin and a showroom's overhead.
Pawn shops do buy gold, silver and coins outright, but the offer is built around quick resale and loan economics, so it is generally the lowest offer of any channel.

Minnesota selling rules & taxes
The rules for selling come first: what applies when you mail your items to us, and what a shop inside Minnesota must do when you sell in person. The tax picture follows. Each card cites the statute or agency it comes from; open a card for the detail. Last verified October 5, 2026. This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

Selling in Minnesota · in-state shops
14 days holdMinnesota jewelry buyers need a county license, must see a photo ID, pay by check or a similar draft rather than cash and hold items 14 days (31 at a pawnshop); coins, bullion and ingots are outside the dealer law.
Minnesota regulates walk-in gold buyers as precious metal dealers under Minn. Stat. 325F.731 to 325F.744: anyone in the business of buying secondhand items containing more than one percent gold, silver or platinum, such as jewelry, watches, flatware and candlesticks. Each dealer needs a one-year license from the county auditor that covers only the locations named on it, must post the minimum per-ounce prices it pays with a notice that offers are based on melt value, and must weigh your items in plain sight on state-approved scales. Transactions in coins, bullion and ingots are excluded from the law entirely.
You show an ID card with your picture and address, and the dealer records each item, the amount paid, the date and your ID details in an ink ledger open to police. Payment must be made by check, draft or a similar instrument drawn on a financial institution, not cash. The dealer then keeps each item unaltered for at least 14 days, and the sheriff or police chief can order a longer hold on an item believed stolen. No dealer may buy from anyone under 18 unless a parent or guardian is present and recorded, and violations are a felony.
Pawnshops follow Minn. Stat. chapter 325J: they record your Minnesota driver's license or ID, or another state's photo ID, have you sign the ticket, keep the record three years, refuse anyone under 18, and keep goods they buy outright on the premises for 31 days.

Sales tax
Partly exemptMinnesota exempts high-purity bars and rounds from sales tax; coins and jewelry are taxed.
Minn. Stat. 297A.67, subd. 34 exempts bars and rounds that are at least 99.9% gold, silver, platinum or palladium and marked with weight, purity and content. Coins are not covered, and jewelry, works of art and scrap are expressly excluded, so they are taxed at the 6.875% state rate plus any local tax.
When you sell: sales tax is a buyer's cost, not yours. You pay no Minnesota sales tax when you sell your gold, silver or platinum.

Capital gains
State income tax appliesMinnesota taxes precious-metals gains as ordinary income, with no exclusion.
Minnesota taxes individual income at 5.35% to 9.85% (Minn. Stat. 290.06, subd. 2c), and a gain on gold, silver or platinum is taxed at those regular rates, with an extra 1% on net investment income above 1,000,000 dollars (Minn. Stat. 290.033); the state has no subtraction for capital gains or precious metals.
Federal rules still apply: the IRS taxes physical precious metals as collectibles, with gains on metal held more than a year capped at 28% and gains on metal held a year or less taxed as ordinary income. Inherited metal generally uses its value on the date of death as its cost basis. We are not tax advisers, so check with yours before you file.

Sound money
Not recognizedMinnesota does not recognize gold or silver as legal tender.
Minnesota has no statute recognizing gold or silver coin as legal tender. That changes nothing about selling: buyers price metal off the live spot market, not face value.
Looking to buy rather than sell? Many coin shops sell bullion over the counter, and we stock gold, silver and platinum coins and bars at live-priced premiums with insured delivery to Minnesota addresses. Minnesota exempts some bullion purchases from sales tax but not others (see the tax rules above), so check whether your specific order qualifies before choosing a local shop over an online dealer. Prices lock at checkout.
Good to know
Straight answers on price, payment and safety for Minnesota sellers.
For bullion coins and bars, a reputable coin shop is usually the strongest local bid. We list 5 shops in St Louis Park, Plymouth, Burnsville, Rochester and St. Louis Park above. For jewelry and scrap, get quotes from two or three buyers and ask each for the weight, the karat and the spot price behind the number so you can compare them. Many jewelers do not buy jewelry back, and pawn shops price around quick resale, so they tend to bid lowest.
Not right now. We have paused mail-in kits from Minnesota for now. Until then, the shops and the state rules on this page are the best way to sell locally. We still sell bullion online at live prices.
A current government photo ID, and only items that are yours to sell. Separate pieces by karat if you can (10k, 14k, 18k and so on are stamped inside rings and on clasps), and know today's spot price so you can check any offer against it.
Some Minnesota coin shops and jewelers will not take dental work or will price it as low-karat gold. Ask whether a buyer tests for platinum and palladium, which dental alloys often contain, before you accept a quote.
Yes. Look for PT950, PT900, PLAT or 950 stamps. Some shops lack a platinum test and quote it as white gold, which undervalues it badly, so ask how they will test it.
Yes. Our shop prices gold, silver and platinum off the live market, and the price locks at checkout.
