Sterling Silver Flatware Value

Sterling flatware is worth its silver first. Here is how to work out what your set is worth in a few minutes, using live prices.

Every piece marked Sterling or 925 is 92.5% pure silver, so its value comes down to two numbers: how much it weighs and where silver is trading today. Pattern, maker and age matter far less than most people expect.

Step 1: Confirm it is sterling, not plate

Turn a piece over and look at the back of the handle. Sterling, Sterling Silver or 925 means solid sterling with real melt value. Marks like EPNS, Silverplate, Quadruple Plate, A1 or IS mean a thin silver coating over base metal, which has little to no melt value. No mark at all? Bring it in or mail it and we will test it for free with XRF.

Step 2: Weigh it

Sterling flatware is bought by weight, not by the piece, and a kitchen scale that reads in grams is all you need. Weights vary by pattern and maker, but most pieces land in these ranges:

*Sterling silver content only, before our payout percentage. Knives are the exception: the blade is stainless steel and the hollow sterling handle is filled with cement or resin, so only the thin handle shell counts. The same goes for weighted candlesticks and footed pieces, where we account for the filled bases.

Step 3: Do the math

Silver is trading at about $53.60 per troy ounce right now, which makes sterling worth roughly $1.59 per gram (spot divided by 31.1035 grams per troy ounce, times 0.925 purity). Multiply that by your total sterling weight:

One teaspoon at 30 g: about $47.82
Twelve dinner forks at 55 g each (660 g): about $1,052.06
A 40-piece service for 8 (five pieces per setting, usually 1,400 to 1,800 g of sterling): about $2,231.65 to $2,869.26

Step 4: What we pay

How do I know if my silverware has value?

Look for a hallmark on the back of the handle or the underside. Sterling, Sterling Silver or 925 means 92.5% silver and real melt value by weight. EPNS, Silverplate or Quadruple Plate means a thin coating over base metal with little to no melt value. Heavier sterling pieces are worth more.

What is the smartest way to sell sterling flatware?

Confirm the Sterling or 925 mark first. If the set carries a known silversmith's mark and a rare pattern, a specialist appraisal might find a collector premium. For most sterling, a direct sale to a refinery that weighs and tests against live spot is the fastest route to cash.

Does old silverware sell for more?

Age alone does not add value; purity and weight do. Sterling or 925 pieces carry melt value tied to today's silver price no matter how old they are. Plated pieces marked EPNS or similar rarely have resale value unless a specific pattern is in collector demand.

What is a 12 piece sterling set worth?

It depends on total sterling weight, not piece count. Twelve teaspoons and twelve full place settings are very different things. Dinner forks and spoons often weigh 40 to 60 grams each, so 12 pieces might be 480 to 720 grams. At today's spot of about $53.60 per ounce, sterling works out to roughly $1.59 per gram; multiply by your weight, then price it from the metal content we measure.
