Is My Jewelry Worth Anything?

Real gold, silver, and platinum jewelry is worth money even when it is broken or out of style. The table shows metals we commonly see in each kind of piece, and a typical weight. Diamonds and other stones are valued on their own, separate from the metal.

Ask us about your items

Common Metals and Typical Weights

Piece Common metals Typical weight
Ring 10K, 14K, or 18K gold. Also sterling silver and platinum. About 2 to 8 grams.
Necklace 10K or 14K gold, or sterling silver. A light chain is often 2 to 8 grams. A heavier chain can be 15 to 40 grams.
Bracelet 10K or 14K gold, or sterling silver. Often 5 to 20 grams. A thin bangle is lighter. A tennis bracelet or heavy link bracelet is heavier.
Watch Solid gold watches are usually 14K or 18K. Many watches that only look like gold are stainless steel with a thin gold layer. A solid gold watch with a metal band often weighs 30 to 80 grams. A plated watch has very little gold.
We pay more for your jewelry than anyone else in Salem.

These weights are typical ranges for solid metal pieces. Your piece may weigh more or less.

How Selling Jewelry Works at Our Salem Shop

We're the refinery, not a middleman reselling to one, so more of your jewelry's value ends up with you.

  1. 1 Test and Weigh An XRF assay gun reads the exact metal content in seconds, with no scratching or acid. Then we weigh it in grams.
  2. 2 Price It at Live Spot Your offer is based on the market price at the moment we test. We pay more than anyone else in Salem.
  3. 3 Get Paid the Same Day Accept and you're paid before you leave. Decline and you take your jewelry home.

Knowledgeable and personal service when we were selling previous metals and scrap silver flatware from our estate. Trent was very patient explaining the process and answering our many questions. We felt welcomed upon entry to the secure building, I would recommend APMR for sell...

Neither is set up to buy. A jeweler earns by selling jewelry, so any offer has to leave room for resale profit, and many will not buy outright at all. A pawn shop offers a loan, discounted for their risk, with interest on top. A buyer that refines precious metals in house has no middleman to pay, so it can pay closer to what your piece is really worth.

14k is 58.3% pure gold, so multiply the weight in grams by 0.583 and then by the spot price per gram. With gold near $4,148.42 an ounce, a gram of 14k is worth about $77.80. A typical band weighs 2 to 6 grams, so the gold alone comes to roughly $155.60 to $466.81 before any stones. We pay based on that market value once we weigh and test the ring.

Usually, yes. Diamonds are valued on carat, cut, color and clarity, not age, though antique cuts like Old European or Old Mine can earn a collector premium. Small accent stones add a modest amount, and the gold or platinum setting is often worth as much or more. We value the metal and the stones separately, then add them up.

Two numbers added together. The band is valued by weight and purity against live spot, about $77.80 per gram of 14k today, and we pay based on that metal content. The diamond is graded on cut, color and clarity, which can mean a few hundred dollars for a lower grade stone or several thousand for an exceptional certified one. Only a full evaluation of both gives you the real total.

Usually a loan of 25% to 60% of the resale value, so somewhere around $250 to $600, and the exact figure varies a lot by shop. The discount covers the risk that you never repay, and interest accrues the whole time. If you want cash rather than a loan, an outright sale to a buyer who pays on real market value gets you much closer to the full amount.
