Sterling Silver Flatware Value
Sterling flatware is worth its silver first. Here is how to work out what your set is worth in a few minutes, using live prices.
Every piece marked Sterling or 925 is 92.5% pure silver, so its value comes down to two numbers: how much it weighs and where silver is trading today. Pattern, maker and age matter far less than most people expect.
Step 1: Confirm it is sterling, not plate
Turn a piece over and look at the back of the handle. Sterling, Sterling Silver or 925 means solid sterling with real melt value. Marks like EPNS, Silverplate, Quadruple Plate, A1 or IS mean a thin silver coating over base metal, which has little to no melt value. No mark at all? Bring it in or mail it and we will test it for free with XRF.
Step 2: Weigh it
Sterling flatware is bought by weight, not by the piece, and a kitchen scale that reads in grams is all you need. Weights vary by pattern and maker, but most pieces land in these ranges:

Step 3: Do the math
Silver is trading at about $63.63 per troy ounce right now, which makes sterling worth roughly $1.89 per gram (spot divided by 31.1035 grams per troy ounce, times 0.925 purity). Multiply that by your total sterling weight:
- One teaspoon at 30 g: about $56.77
- Twelve dinner forks at 55 g each (660 g): about $1,248.93
- A 40-piece service for 8 (five pieces per setting, usually 1,400 to 1,800 g of sterling): about $2,649.25 to $3,406.18
