What is the price of gold today?
Today's gold price is the live spot price, which is currently around $4,167.54 per troy ounce of pure gold. That number is not fixed for the day; it moves continuously while global markets are trading, and you can watch it update in real time on our live gold price page.
What "the price of gold" actually means
When someone mentions the price of gold, they are usually referring to the spot price, which is the value of the pure metal per unit of weight for immediate delivery. It is set by trading on the major international markets and changes second by second during trading hours. The spot price is always fluctuating due to various market factors, including inflation data, the strength of the US dollar, interest rate decisions, central bank buying and geopolitical events. Because gold is treated as a safe-haven asset, it often rises when confidence in other assets falls.
Today's gold price may also refer to the percentage change of the spot price, calculated relative to the price at the beginning of the trading day. When you see "gold up 0.8%" in a headline, that is what is being described: the move since the day's open, not the absolute price.
Per ounce, per gram, per karat
Spot is quoted per troy ounce (31.1035 grams), but most people dealing with jewelry think in grams and karats. Pure gold is currently around $133.99 per gram. Because karat gold is an alloy, the price per gram falls with the karat:
- 24k (99.9% pure): about $133.99 per gram
- 18k (75% pure): about $100.49 per gram
- 14k (58.3% pure): about $78.16 per gram
- 10k (41.7% pure): about $55.83 per gram
These figures represent the value of the metal itself. A buyer's offer for jewelry is a percentage of that melt value, and a dealer's selling price for a coin is spot plus a premium.
How this affects buying and selling with us
AccuratePMR provides live gold and silver prices, along with historical data related to gold spot prices. All prices are updated in real time, and you can view the spot price anytime, from any device, directly on our website. Our staff work from the same live feed of the international markets and see changes as they happen, so the price you are quoted, whether you are buying an American Gold Eagle or selling a broken chain, reflects the market at that moment rather than yesterday's close.
When you sell to us, we pay current market price on gold bullion (close to the live spot price) and based on the metal content we measure on gold jewelry and scrap, based on tested purity and weight. When you buy, you pay spot plus the product's premium. If you want to understand where today's price sits in a longer context, our historical price charts show how gold has moved over weeks, months and years.
