When looking to purchase diamonds or diamond jewelry it is helpful to have some knowledge to help you select the best diamond for your budget. Any jeweler or diamond grader has knowledge in what are known as the 4 C’s: Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat Weight. This is the method used worldwide by diamond graders and jewelers alike to assess the quality of any given diamond. The first C, color, is graded from D (meaning colorless) to Z (meaning light coloring). The chemical purity of the diamond determines whether the diamond is colored, the purer the diamond the less color. The second C, Clarity, is graded from Flawless to Inclusions ranging from Flawless to I3 meaning inclusions are noticeable under 10x magnification. Diamonds are the result of carbon exposed to extreme pressure and extreme heat underneath the earth’s surface, this leads to blemishes that affect the Clarity of the diamond. The third C, Cut, determines how well the diamond interacts with light, and it is graded from Excellent to Poor. The cut grading takes into account the table, crown, pavilion, girdle, and culet measurements and is directly affected by the workmanship quality. The final C, Carat Weight, is a measurement of the diamond’s weight. Each carat is divided into 100 points and allows the grader to accurately grade each diamond. All these factors are taken into account by GIA trained diamond graders.
